Yep - soon it could be a split window...

The video and road condition transported me back to the drive to my Dad's farm in 'Straylia years ago - but I did that in an old beater Falcon wagon (actually a Faircon, since it had Fairlane front sheet metal). That was a fun drive, until they paved it.

Would the old-timey V8 in the C2 be able to cope with the strain of rallying? I'm sure that it wouldn't be able to stand the constant throttle modulation as well as, say, the turbo motor in a Celica GT-Four.

Kinja'd!!! cluelessk > zcorpion111

Kinja'd!!!4

Are you serious?

Chevy small blocks are probably the most reliable longest lasting engines ever produced. In a rally it wouldn't skip a beat.

Kinja'd!!! ScootsMcGee > thethePete
09/01/2013 at 11:02

Kinja'd!!!3

I could have been impressed...Had he gone faster then 50mph! Were you raised riding burros in Mexico? You act like 50mph in a straight line is neck breaking speed. Oh, wait, I forgot that he was driving through a couple small ruts with mud in them. Whoop-dee-doo Basil. Also, he damn near came to a stop to take the corners. Bro, you're on dirt. Get that back end squirrely like a man.

All I'm saying is that if I had put the time and effort into building a machine like that, I wouldn't have driven it slower than the combine 2 fields over.

Kinja'd!!! thethePete > ScootsMcGee
09/01/2013 at 11:08

Kinja'd!!!4

All you're saying is that you're a typical internet hater. Clearly you haven't heard of shakedown runs.

I was raised riding 4-wheelers, dirtbikes and snowmachines. I've skipped across a snowpacked lake at 90mph after I got bucked off my sled when I was 14 years old. Trust me, I've probably been faster, more sideways for longer offroad than you've been driving on gravel. Clearly you haven't spent much time off pavement if you think that 50mph in a Corvette on a rutted 2-track is inconsequential. The only thing I'll give you is that yeah, he seemed to slow down a bit much at the corners, but I also know that speed is deceptive on camera, we don't know if he was doing 50, or 80... Either way, you must have a pretty charmed life if everything is so unimpressive to you. Or you just need to stop trying to be so damn awesome to everyone else.

Judging by the use of field access roads, this is most certainly a shake down run. Didn't sound like the throttle ever got more than 1/2 open. Give them time, chances are there will be some more exciting stuff to come.

Kinja'd!!!4

Nobody cares about your lengthy resume of driving errors and mistakes.

Speed is deceptive, if you don't have anything in the close background/foreground to compare to. It is blatantly obvious he is NOT going 80.

Shakedown runs are fantastic, but why don't you do that and then film the good shit?

Saying that me thinking that driving a Corvette at 50mph on a rutted road isn't special means I've had little experience off road is a little misleading.

First off, it's a Corvette with a heavily modified suspension and truck tires. It's isn't a ZR1 on low pros.

Second, calling that a rutted road is like saying the Indianapolis Motor Speedway is littered with sections made of brick. It's a bit of an exaggeration. I think we could agree that it's a rough road with a handful of very moderate ruts, at worst.

Replica on a truck chassis, ya that would be my guess. Its not like you can't get reproduction GS bodies. My guess it is the Superformance body as they have full GM support (i.e. the Corvette GS badge at the end of the video).

Superformance

Mongoose Motorsports

You realize it's a replica right? There were only 5 original Grand Sports made but tube frame replicas are all over. It's probably either a Mongoose Motorsports or Superformance with some beefed-up suspension and tires (among other things). Nothing of value was lost and now there's a Corvette rally car in our midst. Hooray for replicas!

You must not drive offroad much. Not as easy at it looks. You'll probably respond and say you know Travis Pastrana and you were his 7th cousin and you drive his rally car or something, no. You're obviously inexperienced. Dirt isn't that simple nor easy. Are you sure that maybe with all that horsepower he is spinning? Do you know how easy it is to lose control of a rear wheel V8 rally car? It's not like all four wheels are gripping. It's not like it was born to be a rally car, it's quite quick. WRC cars rarely ever go above 100, thats the WORLD RALLY CHAMPIONSHIP. The best of the best are driving those things that are built from the ground up to do this stuff and they are paired with the best drivers and still don't go 500000000MPH like you want to see. That was very loose dirt, lots of power on the rear wheels, poor suspension. Go home Kiddo, here, take my RC car in the dirt.

Even though I am not Travis' 7th cousin, I do have a very firm grasp of the physics and challenges that are involved with driving different types of vehicles on dirt. Going on about the different types of vehicles I've driven and what speeds I've achieved would obviously be pointless with you, but I can assure you that I know what it's like to drive a relatively light RWD car at speed on a dirt road. Driving above this magical 50mph mark you've established is not impossible for a mere mortal, such as myself. It just takes concentration, planning, and a little stupidity.

However, with both of us agreeing that it is simply a shakedown, I don't see why you're still arguing trying to make it seem as though I'm an idiot. Does it bother you when people on the interwebbings make you look like a bit of a fool? Is that why you've abandoned your "I've driven this/I've wrecked that" strategy for a more simple-minded insult based route? Anywho, I'll go ahead and let you have the last laugh on this one. I gotta go hit up DIRT3 and practice my driving skillz, yo.

P.S. I will take that R/C car of yours. I would be lying if I said I didn't still love toys like that. Thanks in advance.

*EDIT* Sorry, I didn't realize someone else chimed in spouting the same crap as the initial responder. Anywho, I'll leave my second paragraph up as a preemptive response in case he does feel like coming back.

And to you, mustangkr500, I'll award you the coveted "Winner of the Internet" trophy. You are cool.

What I was hearing was dirt and rocks being kicked up into the undercarriage, etc. In short, you really need to learn what makes what road noises. You probably get scared half to death driving down a dirt road in a battle tank.

Unfortunately, I can't view the video, but if this is one of the rare original Gransports, then this is sacrilegious. The man should be run over with said car, and made to kiss Zora Duntov's grave 5,000 times—-a 1,000 times for each Gran Sport made.

There's a difference between dirt roads and sand though. Also difference on climates and location and weather and temperature. Some beach's I can take my polaris 500 and hit 50 in the sandy part (not at the shoreline), some beach's I only go 20. Oh and I have a Traxxas T-Maxx 3.3 custom motor, does about 70-80, I love the sound of Nitro, and the smell. And it is fast, but took a lot of work and I have to work on it a ton. But I like it, I used to work at this place along a fourlane and would take a Terracrusher I had and would run it beside a car, freaked people out like crazy. I still do it once in a while on my road, which is 35mph. Tons of fun. But Nitros make you flinch harder then electric when you crash. I should take a video sometime.

Clearly arguing with you is a moot point, you're determined to not be impressed by a custom and well-built machine.

Your life must suck, being so eternally unimpressed. The video of about 10" of suspension movement was enough to show me the road is far rougher than you think it is, and if you don't think he was going fast, you're a fool or spoiled by internet videos, either way responding to you is clearly a waste of time. I didn't know that Ford's rally heritage stretched that far back! I would have loved to see a V8 falcon take on stuff like a P1800 and a 60s 911 back then.
